Time Does Not Exist

September 4, 2008

Before explaining my very simple argument that time does not exist, review the following:

  • The premise for my argument is that the universe does not have a beginning or an end.
  • The definition of existence is not something to the effect of “to have being under certain conditions”, but “to have actual being”.  To exist is to be definite without being synthetically created by conceptual means.

To help you visualize my argument, I have provided the following:

Consider this: point A (red) and point B (blue) are events (instantaneous moments in time).  The section of the line that is green represents the amount of time between their occurrences.

Since the value of the line going either way is infinity, a point by itself is of no numerical value; it is impossible to measure.  As humans, we constructed a way to measure these points: declaring their values relative to another undefinable point in time.  Time as a concept is very useful to us as a race and helps us organize our lives, but time does not exist; it does not manifest itself in the universe.
